Delphine & Liselotte Rigole and Veerle Castrique will share with you how they crossed Benin by mountainbike and covered a distance of 400 kilometers in 6 days for Vredeseilanden, together with 23 other women.   Besides the sporting challenge, there is of course also the social aspect. The cycling West Flemish women committed themselves to raise an amount of 3000 euro sponsor money per participant at the start of the initiative.

You will hear the full story, from the idea until realisation and reflection after this adventure. What did they learn, would they do it again, what did it bring them?  We hope their story will inspire you!

When a group of West Flemish entrepreneurs - mainly SME leaders - went to Nicargua for a bicycle project linked to charity in November 2016, it inspired a number of spouses or partners to work on a similar project. That is how Biking for Benin came into being. "We are not all women of the entrepreneurs who went to Nicaragua, but still 7 ladies," said spokeswoman Leen De Clercq. "The initiators include Julie Depypere (Sint-Bernardus brewery), Nele Rondelaere (Cameron Fashion, Zwevegem) and Tine Teunynck (Bossuyt Grootkeukens).

In Benin, a country in West Africa with 4 times the area of Belgium, almost half of the population lives below the poverty line. Especially in rural areas, poverty is distressing. Vredeseilanden gives special attention to women's groups who want to specialize in the predominance of locally grown rice. If they can also sell this rice themselves, these women can acquire their own income and invest more in the future of their children. The West Flemish ladies want to make their contribution by means of their project Biking for Benin".
